Summary: | Septic arthritis in horses is a relatively common entity and is
considered as the most severe problem that a joint can be faced with, since the
inflammatory response to bacterial invasion may be severe enough to
cause irreversible damage to the articular cartilage, leading to permanent alterations of the
athletic performance or even euthanasia of the animal.
Septic arthritis can cause irreversible damage to the joint if the infection is not cleared up.
quickly removed from the synovial space, in foals (neonates) it appears more commonly due to
Hematogenous infections and in fewer cases due to iatrogenic or traumatic causes.
The joints most commonly affected by this type of pathology are the
patellofemoral and tarsus femoris. In foals, septic arthritis may or may not be associated with other
systemic infections, such as those of the navel, gastrointestinal tract, and respiratory tract.
It should be noted that in septic arthritis the first clinical signs are increased
the amount of synovial fluid and a high temperature, therefore palpation is important
exhaustive study of all joints that allows detecting cases very early before
limb claudication is evident. |
