description Introduction: Academic performance is a multifactorial concept that is difficult to understand. Qualitative approaches allow the understanding of several factors that compose it. Objective: To explore, from the perspective of orthodontic students, their experiences between academic performance and their social relationships with their peers and with their teachers. Methods: A qualitative hermeneutic study through semi-structured interviews and an analysis from the illustrative perspective of Damaziére and Dubar. Results: Peer relations were important as support mechanisms between high and low academic performance students. Relationships with teachers are highly relevant when establishing situations that lead to staying or coming out of low performance. Conclusions: Relationships between students, and between students and teachers, are important to understand the most relevants factors when thinking about academic performance in orthodontic graduate schools.

Introducción: El rendimiento académico es un concepto multifactorial difícil de entender. Los abordajes cualitativos permiten la comprensión de varios factores que lo componen. Objetivo: Explorar desde la perspectiva de estudiantes de ortodoncia, sus experiencias entre el rendimiento académico con respecto a las relaciones sociales de estos con sus pares y con sus profesores. Métodos: Un estudio cualitativo hermenéutico mediante entrevistas semiestructuradas y un análisis desde la perspectiva ilustrativa de Damaziére y Dubar. Resultados: Las relaciones entre pares fueron importantes como mecanismos de apoyo entre los estudiantes de alto y bajo rendimiento académico. Las relaciones con los profesores tienen alta relevancia al momento de establecer las situaciones que conducen a permanecer o salir del bajo rendimiento. Conclusiones: Las relaciones entre los estudiantes y de estos con los profesores, son importantes para entender los factores con mayor peso al momento de pensar en el rendimiento académico en escuelas de postgrado de ortodoncia.
