(Jaju and Jaju, 2015) Dentro de las maloclusiones que afectan el complejo craneofacial, se encuentra la alteración del tamaño del maxilar, cuando se manifiesta su compresión, es importante identificar el momento adecuado para realizar procedimientos de expansión y conseguir el éxito en el tratamiento. Para decidir el tipo de expansión es determinante conocer el estado de osificación de la sutura media palatina, la cual se puede identificar en imágenes de tomografía computarizada de haz cónico (CBCT). Dichas imágenes no hacen parte de los exámenes de rutina enviados a los pacientes, son 10 veces más costosas que las radiografías comúnmente enviadas y conllevan una mayor radiación.
