Uno de los temas importantes en la formación matemática del estudiante es el estudio de la ecuación cuadrática, ya que además de desarrollar el pensamiento algebraico, tiene muchas aplicaciones en la vida cotidiana. Las ecuaciones en general, dependiendo de su naturaleza tienen soluciones que pueden ser enteras, racionales, reales, complejas, etc. Una clase especial de ecuaciones cuadráticas, que por lo general no se tiene en cuenta en los programas de estudio de matemáticas a nivel de secundaria son las llamadas ecuaciones diofánticas cuadráticas. Una de las características interesantes del estudio de estas ecuaciones radica en que no es fácil hallar sus soluciones y la mayoría de las veces se debe recurrir al ingenio y conocimientos pertenecientes a la teoría de números para llegar a ellas. Además, este tipo de ecuaciones está lleno de historia, debido a que muchos matemáticos famosos han dedicado parte de su vida investigando métodos para hallar sus soluciones.
