El régimen de visitas entre padres e hijos es un mecanismo que puede ser acordado entre los cónyuges, por mandato judicial o por autoridad administrativa, sin embargo, en Colombia, no presenta sanciones para los padres que lo incumplen, más si, repercusiones sociales, psicológicas, culturales en los hijos que no las reciben o no se les garantiza, esto último como consecuencia de la ruptura sentimental, el cónyuge que es privado de la convivencia familiar, decide apartarse y/o desconocer su ejercicio de fortalecer los lazos afectivos y familiares con sus hijos, o el cónyuge que tiene la custodia incurre en alienación parental e impide que el otro vea a los hijos o finalmente al iniciar las visitas y acostumbrar al niño, niña y/o adolescente de forma abrupta decide interrumpirla.
