Los procesos de urbanización y expansión urbana en el mundo moderno han traído consigo una innumerable cantidad de problemáticas a solucionar. La experiencia internacional indica que, para esto, es necesaria la creación de entidades de carácter supramunicipal que permitan una adecuada gobernanza basada en la planeación, ejecución y sostenibilidad de proyectos comunes entre los municipios de un área de influencia. Este articulo aborda aspectos de la creación, desarrollo y dificultades de la Región Metropolitana como figura de tipo asociativa entre Bogotá y sus municipios vecinos que tiene como objetivo solucionar problemáticas en los ámbitos económico, social y ambiental con amplias repercusiones en la calidad de vida de los cerca de 10 millones de personas que habitan en ese territorio.
