Según registros encontrados en la (Cámara de Comercio de Bogotá,) los pioneros de la industria del cuero en el país son principalmente Julia de Rodríguez con su padre Juan de Dios Restrepo, en los años 20’s; Spring Step fundado en 1953. El trabajo de Morales et al. (2010) es uno de los poquísimos antecedentes que hay sobre estudios de la aglomeración de calzado de El Restrepo, y son numerosos los datos que se pueden extraer de dicho trabajo en el momento de hacer una caracterización inicial. Anterior mente era muy pero muy bueno tener un almacén de estos y hasta incluso daba mucha rentabilidad, ahora no son conscientes que los entes de control de Estado, están propendiendo porque todos los negocios existentes en el sector se legalicen y de esta manera evitar el contrabando en la zona; sin embargo, a muchos productores en su afán de crecer y vender barato, muchas veces lo hacen sin tener las normas legales aplicables al negocio, lo legal lo que les puede traer graves problemas a futuro, también se da a conocer como año tras año está desapareciendo el mercado del calzado.
