Description
Summary:Periodontitis is an infectious disease characterized by bag formation that causes periodontal tissue destruction, its treatment is supra, subgingival mechanical debridement, this process is laborious, and the results depend on the technique. That is why ozone therapy is established as an adjuvant in the treatment of periodontal infections due to multiple biological actions. Objective: To evaluate the effect of ozone therapy as an assistant in the treatment of periodontitis in the adult population according to literature review. Materials and methods: A systematic collection of literature on articles related to ozone management in the area of health was carried out; the search was carried out on biomedical platforms such as Pubmed, Science Direct, Google Academic, SciELO, Elsevier, database of Antonio Nariño University. Publications range from 2015-2020 to 55 articles related to the topic. Results: It was reported that ozone at the periodontal level has beneficial results when applied in periodontal soft tissues, because it is involved in clinical insertion gain, in the antiinflammatory process and decreases the count of Gram Positive and Gram negative bacteria in periodontal bags. It also reduces bleeding, but its difference is not significant when compared to other alternatives. Conclusion: Ozone therapy has multiple benefits when used as an alternative therapy of non-surgical periodontal treatment in the presence of periodontitis when irrigated subgingivally, because it decreases the clinical characteristics that occur during the development of this pathology.
