El proceso de investigación, desarrollo e innovación en el área de la ingeniería se circunscribe al contexto científico tecnológico dominado por la física, la química, la geología, las matemáticas y otras ciencias derivadas de estas como fundamentos de ciencias generadoras de estos conocimientos. En este sentido deben considerarse las siguientes características; el saber cómo actitud particular del hombre y su entorno, y obtenido de diversas formas entre ellas la experiencia particular y la formalidad académica, lo cual nos lleva al contexto gnoseológico y científico, el conocimiento como objetivo del saber cuya particularidad es la solidez intrínseca del mismo en el ser lo cual le permite analizar su potencial, la ciencia cuyo propósito es la de articular leyes para comprensión de diversos fenómenos y cuyo medio es la fijación de conocimientos para comprobación de esta. El conocimiento científico no solo se define de acuerdo a su génesis científica referencial, sino que se circunscribe a su disciplina del saber; en este sentido es necesario discernir en la ubicación epistemológica y filosófica de cada ciencia de manera de definir su método.
