From this foundation, as well as from the current and future relevance of increasing the participation of women in the field of science and technology, an interest center is created at the Heladia Mejia IED School, which was founded with the objective of presenting STEM areas as an opportunity to strengthen gender equality. The STEM Girls interest center of the Heladia Mejia School IED, generates in the students an alternative motivation and interest to their daily school environment, allowing them to spend their free time in activities that strengthen their knowledge and skills, particularly in the STEM areas.

Entre las diferentes metas que se proponen a nivel mundial para disminuir la brecha de género, se formula la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible que incluye 17 Objetivos de Desarrollo Sostenible (ODS), de los cuales los ODS 4 y 5 se enfocan en la educación de calidad y la igualdad de género, respectivamente. Desde este fundamento, al igual que desde la relevancia actual y a futuro que tiene aumentar la participación de las mujeres en el campo de la ciencia y la tecnología, se crea un centro de interés en el Colegio Heladia Mejía IED, el cual se fundó con el objetivo de presentar las áreas STEM como una oportunidad para fortalecer la igualdad de género.
