In line with this, the approaches superficial and deep are sketched setting the difference between declarative and functional knowledge. In the above context, we propose four teachers’ competencies to examine and discuss: didactics, transferable skills, research and social nature. El presente artículo, producto de los procesos que se derivan de la línea de investigación Evaluación de la docencia y aprendizaje en el aula, de la Universidad Pedagógica Nacional, muestra que, a partir de varios conceptos de competencia, se resaltan como fundamentales para el actuar competente de un docente: el conocimiento didáctico específico de la disciplina y su naturaleza contextual; se propone, además, como atributo de la competencia docente, la generación de vocación de aprendizaje. En consonancia con lo anterior, se esbozan los enfoques superficial y profundo, a través de los cuales los estudiantes progresan hacia su formación académica y profesional, estableciendo la diferencia entre el conocimiento declarativo y el conocimiento funcional.
