description The concept of urban metabolism was first used by Wolman (1965) to quantify the flows of energy and materials in and out of a hypothetical city and was developed by Douglas (1983), which describes the equations to measure energy, water and balances that constitute the urban metabolism. However, most studies are focused on research rather than practice-oriented and tend to focus on one or more aspects of urban metabolism. The proper integration of available models has not yet managed to give an integral vision of urban sustainability in support of assessment practices of planning and impact (Zhang, 2013). The urban metabolism is built from systems such as water, energy and materials, and generally these systems have a linear sequence of processing, so that the operation of the city depends entirely on imported resources high quality. So in terms of the linear resource management is highly inefficient metabolism and promotes a high dependence on external resources to the city (Leduc & Van Kann, 2012). The analysis of urban metabolism can be an important tool for the study of urban ecosystem. Cities like artificial systems can be redesigned from a better perspective as ecosystems natural, but what approaches should be considered for simulating a natural ecosystem? For this it is appropriate to analyze the performance standards of the urban system based on ecological principles and methods. When a city is compared as a living organism studying its urban metabolism, all flows of energy and materials must be considered.

El concepto de metabolismo urbano fue utilizado por primera vez por Wolman (1965) para cuantificar los flujos de energía y materiales dentro y fuera de una ciudad hipotética, y fue desarrollado por Douglas (1983), que describe las ecuaciones para medir la energía, el agua, y los saldos que constituyen el metabolismo urbano. Sin embargo, la mayoría de los estudios están enfocados a la investigación en lugar de la práctica orientada y tienden a centrarse en uno o varios aspectos del metabolismo urbano. La integración adecuada de los modelos disponibles aún no se ha logrado dar desde una visión integral de la sustentabilidad urbana en apoyo de las prácticas de evaluación de la planificación y el impacto (Zhang, 2013). El metabolismo urbano se construye a partir de sistemas tales como el del agua, la energía y los materiales, y en general dichos sistemas tienen una secuencia lineal de procesamiento, por lo que el funcionamiento de la ciudad depende por completo de la importación de recursos de alta calidad. Por lo que en términos de manejo de recursos el metabolismo lineal es altamente ineficiente y fomenta una alta dependencia de los recursos externos a la ciudad (Leduc y Van Kann, 2012).El análisis del metabolismo urbano puede ser una importante herramienta para el estudio del ecosistema urbano. Las ciudades como sistemas artificiales pueden ser rediseñadas desde una mejor perspectiva como ecosistemas naturales, pero ¿qué enfoques deben ser considerados para simular un ecosistema natural? Para esto es apropiado analizar las normas de funcionamiento del sistema urbano, basadas en principios y métodos ecológicos.
