Las condiciones medioambientales actuales exigen la revisión del ejercicio profesional en el campo de la arquitectura, el urbanismo y la construcción. En el artículo se presentan: los sistemas de certificación de construcciones sostenibles desarrollados en diversas regiones del mundo, herramientas que ayudan a los profesionales mencionados a acometer la tarea de producir construcciones “verdes”; las características que deben tener los materiales de construcción para considerarlos sostenibles, y los sistemas para evaluar el ciclo de vida de las edificaciones LCA (Life Cycle Assessment), herramienta para la medición del impacto ambiental de las edificaciones y su verificación en términos de sostenibilidad.
