En este artículo se estudian las causas del detrimento de las exportaciones de fibra de algodón de la Nueva Granada a la península española durante el último cuarto del siglo XVIII. La hipótesis que comprobamos, por métodos econométricos y cualitativos, es que la debilidad del mercado interno español fue el factor fundamental que explica esta disminución de las exportaciones de algodón de la Nueva Granada. Esto requirió hacer una reflexión teórica sobre las causas del crecimiento económico en una sociedad preindustrial y la importancia de mercados integrados para explicar las dinámicas productivas y comerciales.
