Thus: a) the context of university teaching is the university: education of subjects, professional training and curriculum building, b) the knowledge involved in cognitive and metacognitive processes are those concerning to the pedagogical-didactic located in professional scenarios, c) the construction of knowledge and learning is done in community, d) action has as aims transformation of the educational and professional fields, and e) it involves self-recognition, the recognition of others in the community and recognition of contexts.

Este artículo, producto de investigación, hace un breve recorrido por literatura especializada en el tema de la docencia universitaria, así como por resultados de investigación que argumentan el problema existente en torno a las falencias de la docencia universitaria; frente a lo que se plantea el concepto competencia, como una alternativa para estructurar un posible modelo de docente universitario. De esta manera, el artículo aborda el concepto competencia de manera general, definiéndole desde varios componentes: cognitivo, metacognitivo, social, contextual, fáctico y de identidad; desde allí se deriva el concepto competencia docente universitaria. Así, el contexto de la docencia universitaria es la universidad en tanto formación de sujetos, de profesionales y construcción de currículo; los saberes involucrados en los procesos cognitivos y metacognitivos son aquellos relativos a lo pedagógico-didáctico en relación a los escenarios de acción profesional; la construcción de saber y de aprendizajes se hace en comunidad; y la acción tiene como objetivo la transformación de la realidad educativa y del campo profesional; ello implica el autorreconocimiento, el reconocimiento de los demás en la comunidad y el reconocimiento de los contextos.
