Inicialmente, el artículo presenta el estado actual de la arborización de la ciudad de Ibagué, lo que incluye un listado de las especies nativas y exóticas que cuentan con poblaciones representativas en el espacio público. A continuación se presentan los criterios para la selección de especies que fortalecen la Estructura Ecológica Principal- EEP, las especies seleccionadas y recomendadas, así como los beneficios ecológicos que aporta cada una de ellas. El artículo es uno de los resultados de la investigación "Fortalecimiento de la EEP a partir de la identificación y selección de especies para la arborización urbana", la cual se adelantó entre 2006 y 2008 en siete ciudades colombianas.
