Además de su papel estratégico como infraestructura de transporte colectivo, una estación de autobuses está cargada de centralidad. Lo está, puesto que propicia una simbiosis eficiente de una amplia articulación de entidades, mecanismos y acciones. Más allá de aquello en lo que técnicos y políticos ven una mera solución infraestructural, una terminal de autobuses se descubre como lugar hipersocializado, marco de una actividad múltiple en que se hace tangible la condición bifurcada y contradictoria de la vida urbana, aunque también su capacidad integradora. Todas esas virtudes como polo de actividad social aparecen reconocidas en la observación de la vida ordinaria de la gare routière1 de Ziguinchor, la ciudad más importante de la Casamance, Senegal.
