El tema de esta conversación es la construcción de un árbol binario a partir defracciones mediantes, bautizado con los apellidos del matemático alemán Moritz Stern ydel relojero y matemático aficionado francés Achille Brocot. En su exposición sobre el árbolde Stern-Brocot el tío Pedro nos explica qué es la fracción mediante y nos proporcionaalgunos datos históricos sobre cómo el matemático Nicolás Chuquet la utilizaba para resolverecuaciones. Finalmente , demuestra que en este árbol aparece toda fracción positiva eirreducible exactamente una vez.
