Este artículo analiza las razones de que gran parte del arte contemporáneo siga siendo una experiencia no asimilada aún en nuestros días, centrándose en el estudio de los factores que potencialmente determinan la experiencia estética en nuestra época, planteando una reflexión que relaciona áreas de conocimientos culturales, artísticos e históricos, con vistas a ofrecer un trabajo que profundice en los procesos creativos del arte contemporáneo y en el origen del desapego entre arte contemporáneo y público. Las teorías sobre la presencia de la cultura romántica y la necesidad de un nuevo espectador pueden ofrecer luz para situarnos en la realidad del problema, y posiblemente el exceso de discurso estético sea la causa del mismo, así como el abandono de la teoría de proporción y armonía en las artes plásticas y visuales, y la renuncia a la idea de narración en el arte musical.
