El espacio público y el paisaje en Puerto Vallarta han estado ligado al tipo de turismo que se desarrolló en la ciudad (de sol y playa) mismo que ha colocado a esta ciudad como uno de los destinos turísticos más visitados de México. Este trabajo realiza un análisis del paisaje histórico y social del Malecón, espacio público de referencia en esta ciudad, mismo que en el año 2011 se sometió a un proceso de reestructuración con una intervención que le dio una nueva imagen que no es muy coincidente con la de pueblo mexicano que históricamente desarrolló. Este nuevo paseo peatonal resultante correspondió más al proceso de turistificación que ha seguido el desarrollo de la ciudad desde hace más de una década.
