Sumario: | Bees are very important beings in nature due to their pollination work in different floral
and fruit crops. These insects, like other living beings, need optimal health in order to maintain
good apiary productivity. In the present investigation, the presence of two main bacterial agents
that affect the health of honey bees known as Paenibacillus larvae and Melissococcus plutonius,
which cause American foulbrood and European foulbrood, respectively, was determined. Twelve
productive apiaries belonging to the municipalities of Cajibío and Popayán Cauca were visited,
taking into account two evaluation criteria: strong and weak hive of each beekeeping unit. A total
of 240 bacteriological tests were analyzed among larvae, adult bees and comb, without cases of
American foulbrood and European foulbrood, but there were presence of bacteria from
Lactobacillus and Apilactobacillus genera. The results obtained reflect good hive health indexes,
but it is necessary to continue with the implementation of surveillance and control strategies to
avoid major hive losses |
