En el área de las Matemáticas, es muy importante potenciar en los diferentes niveles de escolaridad el pensamiento geométrico y métrico, sin embargo, en la actualidad no se tienen en cuenta nociones básicas de topología que son muy importantes para el desarrollo del pensamiento matemático como lo plantea Piaget e Inhelder (1975), quienes resaltan la importancia de abordar estas nociones en los niños para desarrollar sus estructuras espaciales. Pero al revisar los estándares en matemáticas (2006) del Ministerio de Educación Nacional (MEN) solo se plantean nociones de teoría de grafos en el grado octavo; sin que ello sea prueba de la puesta en escena dentro de las mallas curriculares de los colegios.
