La topología es una rama fundamental de las matemáticas que se utiliza en el desarrollo de diferentes áreas como análisis matemático, ecuaciones diferenciales, teoría de grafos, etc., además de eso, es una herramienta útil en diferentes contextos como química, física, redes, etc., por tanto, es conveniente incluir la topología en los lineamientos curriculares de matemáticas para educación básica y educación media, para que los estudiantes puedan avanzar a estudios superiores con una idea básica de algunas nociones topológicas, lo anterior es posible dado que esta rama de la matemática se caracteriza por la forma intuitiva en que se pueden describir los conceptos que la fundamentan, lo que facilita su abordaje en etapas tempranas de aprendizaje, sin embargo, si comparamos los estudios realizados en topología, son pocas las investigaciones que han relacionado conceptos de topología con la enseñanza en educación básica y media.
