Materials and methods: In vitro experimental study. Essential oil was extracted by steam drag, using a Soxhlet system with distilled water as diluent, dilutions from 5% to 100% of the essential oil were made. Reference strain of S. mutans ATCC®25175 seeded on 5% blood agar was used. Sensitivity was evaluated with the agar diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer), with the formation of inhibition zones ≥18 mm. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) and 50% lethal dose (LD50) were determined, based on the 0.5 turbidity pattern of the McFarland scale, equivalent to 1.5 x 108 UFC/ml. Results: They were obtained by evaluating the degree of sensitivity of S. mutans to concentrations between 5% and 100% of the essential oil of C. nucifera. Concentrations greater than 50% of the essential oil of C. nucifera generated inhibition zones ≥ 18 mm on S. mutans, a MBC of 145.6 mg/dl and an LD50 of 91.0 mg/dl were found. From a 30% dilution, inhibition zones ≥ 15 mm were observed. Conclusion: Cocos nucifera essential oil has an antibacterial effect on S. mutans. Cocos nucifera, posee amplia actividad antimicrobiana, reconocido en medicina herbaria como medicamento para tratar enfermedades por sus propiedades medicinales. Streptococcus mutans es un microorganismo anaerobio facultativo, involucrado en procesos cariosos. Objetivo: Determinar el efecto antibacteriano del aceite esencial de Cocos nucifera frente a S. mutans. Materiales y métodos: Estudio experimental in vitro. Se extrajo aceite esencial por arrastre de vapor, utilizando un sistema soxhlet con agua destilada como diluyente, se realizaron diluciones del 5% al 100% del aceite esencial. Se utilizó cepa de referencia de S. mutans ATCC®25175 sembrada en agar sangre 5%. La sensibilidad se evaluó con el método de difusión en agar (KirbyBauer), con formación de halos de inhibición ≥18 mm. Se determinó concentración mínima inhibitoria (CMI), concentración mínima bactericida (CMB) y dosis letal 50% (DL50), partiendo del patrón de turbidez 0.5 de la escala de McFarland, equivalente a 1.5 x 108 UFC/ml. Resultados: Se obtuvieron evaluando el grado de sensibilidad de S. mutans a concentraciones entre el 5% y el 100% del aceite esencial de C. nucifera. Concentraciones superiores al 50% del aceite esencial de C. nucifera generaron halos de inhibición ≥ 18 mm sobre S. mutans, se encontró una CMB de 145,6 mg/dl y una DL50 de 91,0 mg/dl. A partir de una dilución del 30% se observaron halos de inhibición ≥ 15 mm. Conclusión: El aceite esencial de Cocos nucifera tiene efecto antibacteriano sobre el S. mutans.
