En los caninos, el tercer y el cuarto sonido cardíaco S3 y S4 se definen como sonidos cardíacos difíciles de auscultar y su presencia, en la mayoría de las especies, se puede ver en casos de cardiomiopatías, a diferencia de los equinos donde se presentan de manera normal (Ynaraja, s.f.). Los sonidos S3 y S4 se presentan durante el llenado ventricular, momento en el que hay flujo sanguíneo desde el atrio hacia el ventrículo, y que al momento de ingresar al ventrículo genera un choque con las paredes ventriculares y un volumen sistólico final produciendo el sonido (Silverman, 1990).
