The study was carried out with an experimental design in two phases, one under action research and the other using elements of the grounded theory, which implied the design of a didactic unit consisting of eight activities based on the basic principles of counting, an instrument that was implemented and developed with first-year engineering students in the Problem Solving course.

Esta investigación se basa en el análisis de las manifestaciones del pensamiento matemático que surgen durante la solución de problemas significativos, matemáticos y de contexto, en el marco del análisis combinatorio, y la correspondiente construcción de significados de los conceptos implícitos en las mismas con el objetivo de caracterizar y consolidar un modo de pensar que se denominó pensamiento combinatorio. El estudio se realizó con un diseño experimental en dos fases, una bajo la investigación-acción y la usando elementos de la teoría fundamentada, lo cual implicó el diseño de una unidad didáctica constituida por ocho actividades sustentadas en los principios básicos de conteo, instrumento que se implementó y se desarrolló con los estudiantes de primer año de las carreras de ingeniería, en el curso de Solución de Problemas.
