La artritis séptica en equinos es una entidad de ocurrencia relativamente común y se considera como el problema más severo al que se puede ver enfrentada una articulación ya que la respuesta inflamatoria a una invasión bacteriana puede ser suficientemente severa como para causar lesiones irreversibles al cartílago articular, llevando a alteraciones permanentes del desempeño atlético o, incluso, a la eutanasia del animal. La artritis séptica puede causar daños irreversibles en la articulación si la infección no se elimina rápidamente del espacio sinovial, en potros (neonatos) aparece más comúnmente por infecciones hematógenas y en menos casos por causas iatrogénicas o traumáticas. Las articulaciones más comúnmente afectadas por este tipo de patologías son la femoropatelar y el tarso crural. En potros, la artritis séptica puede o no asociarse a otras infecciones sistémicas, como las del ombligo, tracto gastrointestinal y tracto respiratorio. Hay que destacar que en la artritis séptica los primeros signos clínicos son el aumento de la cantidad de líquido sinovial y una elevada temperatura, por tanto es importante la palpación exhaustiva de todas las articulaciones que permite detectar casos muy tempranamente antes que la claudicación del miembro sea evidente.
