Este artigo aborda a pertinência das relações entre as práticas de conservação do patrimônio arquitetônico e cultural e as discussões relacionadas aos problemas ambientais que afligem especialmente as grandes metrópoles no cenário contemporâneo. O desenvolvimento da narrativa perpassa por conceitos-chave, compondo um quadro multifacetado, com base em consultas de autores que se remetem a documentos internacionais, explorando diferentes enfoques relacionados ao tema. O Plano de Recuperação do Centro Histórico de Bolonha (1971-1984) possibilita discutir acerca dessas questões presentes na agenda contemporânea, ligadas à preservação do patrimônio cultural e ambiental.
