Los Jardines Botánicos, además de tener una importancia como medio de información y difusión sobre el mundo de las plantas, son considerados espacios de recreación pasiva, de protección, preservación y conservación de una gran variedad de especies, y de investigación en el campo vegetal. Considerando estos aspectos, el texto se orienta a exponer, de manera sucinta, los orígenes de estos espacios verdes, sus diversas funciones, así como describir los Jardines Botánicos más destacados en Colombia y el mundo.
