La ciudad de Santa Marta ha crecido alrededor de su puerto que la ha ubicado en la misma vía de desarrollo que estas importantes capitales mundiales. Sin embargo, el puerto de Santa Marta se ha convertido en un escenario fundamental para su crecimiento. Considerando el creciente desarrollo y crecimiento económico que día tras día viene presentando la actividad comercial en el mundo en que vivimos, en el que son muy comunes los términos globalización y/o mundialización, cabe resaltar el papel fundamental que desempeña la logística y todos sus componentes en el adecuado engranaje del comercio internacional Y es que el panorama que se vislumbra en el mundo en el que se caracteriza hoy en día, refleja una dura batalla, en la que sólo se sostienen las organizaciones que logran ser competitivas; cada día las diferentes empresas deben concentrarse en replantear una y otra vez sus procesos, a fin de mejorar sus indicadores de productividad, poniendo una vista en sus procedimientos y sus resultados, y otra en lo que están haciendo sus competidores. Sin duda, quienes logran el éxito en el entorno empresarial se identifican por la efectividad de sus procesos logísticos, optimizando al máximo los recursos con los que cuenta, mediante la alineación de sus operaciones, lo que les permite generar altos estándares de calidad y ahorros en tiempo, el cual cada día es más equivalente a dinero costos; lo sorprendente es que no es suficiente alcanzar los objetivos propuestos para hoy, puesto que el día de mañana los competidores habrán superado los resultados obtenidos.
